Aircraft Hanger, Phoenix Estate

This listed historic aircraft hanger was used during the 2nd World War. In 1989 this building was coated and in 2005 it was repaired. Despite repairs to the felt overcoating on the pitched corrugated asbestos cement roof, there were still a number of leaks present. Rain had penetrated the roof joints, particularly around the roof light areas causing potential damage to the contents which was unacceptable. Before any refurbishment could begin, thorough testing of the existing substrate was carried out to ensure the proposed coating systems were fully compatible. The existing asbestos cement sheets were cleaned using Torkill “W” Antifungal Wash to ensure all moss and fungal spores were destroyed. Damaged and defective roofing sheets were replaced as required. The existing coatings were thoroughly scrubbed down with Tor Wash Down Solution to remove heavy deposits of contaminants, then thoroughly rinsed off. The laps, joins and areas around the roof lights were coated first with a primer which was chosen to promote adhesion on the surfaces with varying conditions where necessary. Raincoat™ Fibretex, as supplied by Promain  an internally reinforced coating containing inert chopped fibres was then applied. The coating is used to provide added strength when stripe coating and as an overall protective coating system. Finally a topcoat of Raincoat™ HB Smooth was applied, which provided a smooth, low-sheen finish.  The Raincoat™ Waterproofing System has been developed over many years to solve the problems associated with the long-term waterproofing of mechanically sound pitched roof surfaces. This cold liquid-applied waterproofing system provides flexible, durable, UV protection, and 100% waterproofing protection. The work could be safely carried out with the building occupied due to the cold nature of the product.

Certifire approval for fire upgrading coating systems

Tor Coatings available from Promain has become the world’s first provider of fire upgrading protective coatings to achieve Certifire status. Certifire is a globally recognised third party certification scheme for construction products with fire performance. It is designed to give confidence to specifiers, building owners and enforcement authorities and is operated by Warrington Certification, a division of Exova Warringtonfire; the world’s leading independent certification, testing and fire engineering body. This level of independent third party product certification sets Tor Coatings apart and demonstrates the firm’s continued commitment to preserving life through the provision of world class fire protective coatings technologies. Tor Coatings is the market leading provider of fire upgrading coating systems for communal areas and fire escape routes in the UK social housing sector. The announcement will be of great interest to specifiers operating in the sector, who, under current fire safety legislation, are advised to give preference to products with recognised third party accreditation whenever possible. In order to achieve Certifire approval, Tor Coatings had to pass a series of rigorous independent certification tests. These were conducted on and off site and designed to verify critical areas such as product performance, manufacturing processes and quality assurance. The testing was carried out by Warrington Certification who will also conduct annual audits of Tor Coatings to ensure ongoing compliance with the Certifire scheme.

Bradford Court Roof Paint

Bradford Court, a large multi-storey housing block, has recently undergone a flat roof refurbishment using Elastaseal waterproofing system.
The existing asphalt roof had been the source of several leaks. Several flats on the top floor were out of use and the Housing Association could not rent these flats out, causing loss of revenue. A long term solution was needed that allowed all of the plant and equipment on the roof to be encapsulated in order to stem the leaks.
After a complete site assessment and free site survey by Promain the paint specialist, a  detailed bespoke specification was produced for the client and Elastaseal 15 was determined as the most suitable solution to resolve the existing problems.
Elastaseal forms a seamless polyurethane membrane that bonds to virtually any roof substrate and provides unparalleled waterproof protection. Depending on the level of specification the system guarantees 10 to 25 years’ waterproof protection.

The Elastaseal system combines high elasticity with excellent film strength. This means the system will move with the roof without splitting or shearing, whilst providing a long-lasting and durable surface.
Unlike traditional traditional roofing refurbishment methods that are reliant on flames and heat such as felt and bitumen, Elastaseal is applied cold, making it one of the safest refurbishment materials on the market.

Berney Arms Windmill

Following a site visit and works identified in previous surveys it was agreed
that the mill is showing signs of neglect. There are large areas of blown
brickwork caused by ingress of water over a number of years, due to the lack of and cracking of tar on these areas and poor maintenance. It is exposing the inner core of the brick to the elements and if left the brickwork will deteriorate
and eventually fall out making the mill unstable or at risk of partial collapse.
It is proposed that the mill is repainted with 2x coats of Refined Coal Tar /brushing tar to exposed areas of brickwork and one final overall coat to the mill. It is anticipated that this will give a characteristic gloss finish turning to matt over approximately 24 months and will require further coating in the future dependent on erosion due to the climate.

Owatrol D1 and D2

The New Medway Steam Packet Company was formed in 1919 out of the old Medway Steam Packet Company which had been in operation since 1881 and traced its origins back to 1837. The operations of the Medway Steam Packet Company had ceased when their two paddlers, Princess of Wales and City of Rochester has been taken over by the Admiralty during the First World War. As a result the new company embarked on a period of rapid growth, purchasing two more vessels, the small PS Audrey from Bournemouth and the well known Thames steamer Queen of the South (ex-Woolwich Belle). They also ordered PS Medway Queen new for the 1924 season and in 1925 bought PS Walton Belle which joined the fleet as Essex Queen.

As with all old vessels a program of regular maintenance is required, carried out by volunteers  in their spare time it is a true labour of love. Promain have been assisting many project such as this one in specifying quality product offering  solutions to the age long problem of rust and decay. Many of the product suggested will offer 25 years service life. Promain helps stretch McLaren Formula One by 400%

Following a discussion with the maintenance team at McLaren regarding their hospitality trailer that was showing signs of leaking Promain suggested the use of Bedec Superflex as a remedy , this product was put forward as it offers amazing elastomeric qualities a must when coating a roof that will constantly be moving.  When the vehicle is on the move (especially if driven by Lewis!!!!) as with all large vehicles as they go round corners and over bumps they are designed to flex and move this causes stress on the joints and after time these joints start to leak. Bedec Superflex a water based roofing compound copes with this stress by flexing up to 400%. Easy to apply by brush and quick drying as well as amazing adhesion makes Superflex the idea solution to this common problem.

Lessingham Church

Further to an enquiry at The Traditional Paint Company regarding damp and mould in Lessingham Church Classidur Tradition was specified.   Classidur is a unique, high quality paint system that deals with serious stain damage efficiently and cost effectively.
Unlike a conventional emulsion, Classidur exerts no stress on the area it covers, which means it won’t peel or flake even on difficult surfaces such as limewash or distemper, tackling dried water stains and graffiti, nicotine, mould, soot and smoke in just two cover-all coats.
A lightweight coating, but with a high solid content, it has a high-tech composition of less than 1% aromatics with no emulsifiers and plasticizers, a formulation that avoids drawing old stains back to the surface. It’s ideal as a long-term stain block and covers all. It is virtually odour free and leaves no overlap marks.
Classidur also features a high level of vapour permeability, allowing surfaces to breathe and dry out after redecoration – 88% permeable (compared to limewash and distemper) versus 45 – 50% with conventional emulsion. With no water vapour build up behind the coatings, the risk of subsequent blistering of paint is greatly reduced.
As a cost-saving alternative for the decoration and maintenance of housing, hospitals, schools and other public buildings, renovation paints challenge traditional methods of paint application – providing a lower cost per square metre than a conventional system. For example, using two coats of renovation paint instead of a conventional emulsion to redecorate following fire damage can save 50% in basic preparation costs.
